If you look out at the skyline of Greenville, South Carolina—recognized as one of the most successful urban renaissance stories in the world—you’ll see much of our handiwork. We’re proud to have played a role in the development of this city that continues to win accolade after accolade. Today, Harper is bringing that same powerful impact to other cities throughout the Carolinas.
Harper was selected to perform preconstruction services, site work, and construction services for the construction of A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School, the first “STEM”-based and most innovative primary school in South Carolina. Located in downtown Greenville along the banks of the Reedy River, A.J. Whittenberg emphasizes engineering in their learning and is also in partnership with the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center. In an age where school districts are most commonly built in the suburbs, the downtown location of this new 600-student elementary school provides many opportunities for children due its close proximity to the City.
The facility is an 87,500 SF structure that features a three-story atrium, collaborative work spaces, a dining area, and library. Engineering labs are visible from both the interior and exterior of the building. As a unique learning tool elements of the structural steel, concrete retaining walls, and precast concrete wall panels are exposed throughout the building, allowing students to better understand the structure’s engineering components.
For this project, the school district choose pre-qualified bidders due to its significance and unique nature. Harper worked with the school district and architect to ensure a quality building that was built within budget and on schedule. This project received LEED® Silver Certification upon completion.
